Turn R1 million of virtual moola into real rewards: Join the JSE Investment Challenge game

IN A NUTSHELL: From small rural villages to university towns, students are learning how the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) works. How? By taking part in a virtual trading game called the JSE Investment Challenge.

In the village of Bhundu, Mpumalanga, where potholes and dirt roads mark the way to Mpumelelo Secondary School, something extraordinary is happening. This quintile 3 school, where many students rely on the school’s meals as their only food for the day, has become a powerhouse in the world of investment education.

For the second consecutive year, Mpumelelo teams dominated the JSE Investment Challenge Income Portfolio category, claiming all top five spots in 2024. Taking the lead was Team MP the Unpredictable, followed by MP Undefeated Girls and MP Unbeatable Traders. Their achievements have brought pride to their classrooms, showing that determination and teamwork can lead to success, no matter the circumstances.

At the other end of the country, in the university town of Stellenbosch, Team Koffie & Beskuit 2.0 made waves in the University Speculator Portfolio category. Marnus Kotze and Thomas Theron achieved a portfolio growth of over 18%, earning them R30 000 and a trip to an international stock exchange.

What’s the secret behind their success?

The JSE Investment Challenge is more than just a game — it’s a chance to learn, grow, and unlock opportunities. Teams from schools and universities across South Africa are given a virtual R1 million to invest in real JSE-listed stocks over six months. Success requires strategy, teamwork, and the courage to take risks.

Each month, the best-performing teams earn cash prizes for their members, principals, and supervising teachers. By the end of the challenge, the top teams in each category walk away with even bigger rewards, including a share of R80 000 per portfolio and international trips.

Why should you join in 2025?

  1. Learn Real-Life Skills: The competition teaches you how to manage money, make smart investment decisions, and work as a team — all essential for your future.
  2. Win Big: With monthly and annual prizes, your efforts could translate into substantial rewards.
  3. Stand Out: Participation in the challenge will look good on your CV or university applications.
